Description for 2024/25

The module will build on skills acquired in German 3 or equivalent (e.g. GCSE Grade B-C/4-5, CEFR Level A1+) and expand the students¿ vocabulary base and ability to interact in everyday situations in German. You will consolidate and broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in class, as well as practice communicative skills.
The topics covered in this module include family, sports and health and talking about one¿s home country. As the focus of this module is on communication skills, a large proportion of class time will be based on oral work - speaking in groups and in pairs in a variety of question-and-answer and role play exercises. You will also develop reading and writing skills in German. The course will give a basic outline and structure to the module and will be supplemented by regular video work, grammar exercises and other materials.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR A2).

The module aims at improving students communication skills; to consolidate previous grammatical knowledge and widen their vocabulary; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become efficient language learners.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of personal relevance (e.g. studies, work, hobbies, past experiences, etc.) when people speak clearly: 1,3
Understand, summarize and extract key information from written texts related to areas of personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in familiar situations, asking and answering questions related to a range of topics (educational background, work, hobbies, past experiences, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks clearly: 3
Write notes, messages and texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to the English language: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the German speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language: 1,2,3

22 hours of contact time in class.
40 hours assessment preparation and completion.

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one German language module per semester.
