Japanese 2 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR A1)
This module will develop students Japanese language communication skills, enabling them to speak, listen, read, and write in carrying out simple and routine tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying or travelling in Japan. Functions and topics such as giving descriptions of events and places, talking about impressions, presenting and receiving gifts, making social arrangements will be covered. Students will also become familiar with some aspects of cultural specific behaviour.
Aims
This module is designed for students who have completed Japanese 2 or equivalent and will develop students' Japanese language communication skills, enabling them to speak, listen, read, and write in carrying out simple and routine tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying or travelling in Japan.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Recognise and understand familiar words, and basic sentences related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3Read and extract key information from short, simple sentences and texts written in Japanese: 1,2Interact in very simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions in areas of immediate need, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3Write simple sentences and texts providing personal information in Japanese: 1,2Understand and use simple grammatical structures and rules and compare them to English: 1,2,3Recognise and act upon very basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in Japan: 1,2,3

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment formStudents can only take one Japanese language module per semester.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Online Tasks weighted 30%Online tasks.Students will have to complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.
2: Class Test weighted 20%Class Test.Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.
3: Oral Exam weighted 50%Spoken Interaction AssessmentA 6-10 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Task may include presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups, individual marks will be awarded to each student.
