The development of an improved transportation network was a critical factor for the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Although not the first canal to be constructed in the British Isles, the Trent and Mersey Canal was visionary in its scale and ambition and at its very heart was Josiah Wedgwood.

This talk explores the impetus behind its development in North Staffordshire in the eighteenth century, its importance in transportation of goods from Liverpool to Hull, and the men behind it.
