Continuum of Selves, the World’s Only Jazz-Philosophy Fusion band, plays the music of Thelonious Monk
Continuum of Selves is:
Ray Butcher – trumpet
James Tartaglia – philosophy and saxophone
Fino Lopes – double bass
Lee Allatson – drums
Continuum of Selves is led by James Tartaglia, Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Keele University. James studied jazz saxophone with Blue Note recording artist George Garzone at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. He now combines philosophy with jazz in unique ways. In this performance of the unique, eccentric, angular music of the “Genuis of Modern Music” Thelonious Monk, James will improvise philosophy as if playing a saxophone solo – he has never done this before, probably nobody else has either! He will be joined by British trumpet star Ray Butcher, whose band ‘Butcher’s Brew’ has performed at Ronnie Scott’s, the 606 club and across Europe and the USA. Portuguese bassist Fino Lopes has performed with saxophone legend David Murray, Martin Speake, and also with the Beatles producer George Martin for the 50th anniversary celebration of the United Nations. Drummer Lee Allatson has worked with stars like John Russell, Paul Dunmall, Alan Wilkinson, Maggie Nicols, Masaharu Shoji, Steve Beresford and Damo Suzuki; he is central to the Leicestershire jazz scene, where he leads 3 different bands: 17-piece 'World Jazz Juggernaut' Ka Safar, The Fourmasons, and Grupo Bossa.
This will be a unique evening of hard swinging jazz – with some intense philosophy too!
This performance has been made possible by support from the Royal Institute of Philosophy and ArtsKeele.
This event is FREE to all, but please do register via the Keele Online store via the link so we have an idea of audience number.
