Two inspirational individuals are to be recognised for their outstanding careers and contributions to society at Keele University’s graduation ceremonies later this month.

Keele University has announced that it will award two honorary degrees in January 2018 to Becci Bryant and Dave Emley BEM.

Becci Bryant is currently Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and is the first woman in the UK to have achieved this prestigious position, after beginning her career as a firefighter.

Becci is being recognised for her outstanding career in the Fire Service, her contribution to the safety of the people of Staffordshire, and for being an exceptional role model and a champion for diversity in all its forms.

Speaking about her award, Becci commented:

“It is an absolute honour to receive an honorary degree from Keele University and as an alumni of the University it makes the award even more special. I am very humbled to think that my contributions to the Fire Service and importantly the communities of this great County have been viewed as worthy of such recognition.”

Dave Emley BEM worked at Keele University as a technician for over 40 years until he retired in 2016, and during that time contributed an enormous amount of effort in showcasing the natural history and beauty of the campus - in addition to his day job - coming up with the idea to turn the campus into an arboretum and inspiring generations of staff, students and visitors. He continues to run free guided walks around the campus in his retirement.

Dave’s national status in natural history was recognised by the award of a British Empire Medal in the 2017 New Year Honours list for services to Higher Education and Natural History.

Dave is being recognised for his outstanding contribution to natural history education and the biodiversity of the University campus and its local, national and international standing.

Speaking about his award, Dave commented:

“I am thrilled and deeply touched to receive this award. It has been a great pleasure to pass on my knowledge of the natural world to staff, students and visitors to Keele while at the same time promoting our wonderful campus to a wider audience.”
