Keele Law Society complete the Welsh Three Peak Challenge
Members of the Keele Law Society and staff from the School of Law undertook the Welsh Three Peak Challenge recently to fundraise for the charity Silence of Suicide (SOS).
The team took on the challenge of hiking the three highest peaks in Wales including Snowdon (1,085m) in the North, Cader Idris (893m) in the middle, and Pen y Fan (886m) in the South; a total walking distance is 27.4km, all to be completed within 24 hours.
SOS was founded by Keele alumnus Michael Mansfield QC and his partner Yvette Greenway to reduce the stigma, shame, and silence that goes hand in hand when someone is feeling depressed and having thoughts of suicide. SOS aims to work with young people and set up a helpline for post meetings and on-going support.
Michael and Yvette said: “Every step you take and every pound you make will give hope and respite to those for whom daily mental wellbeing has become an overwhelming, onerous and oppressive burden. Together we can lift that by conversation, communication and contact. Stop the Silence.”
Professor Alison Brammer, Head of the School of Law, said: “This challenge was inspired and led by the students themselves, from planning the route and organising travel and accommodation through to selection of a very worthwhile fundraising cause. It was a privilege to join them. I wouldn’t wish to spend every Saturday walking from 5.30am until 10.30pm but we had great fun and have every reason to feel proud at completing the challenge.
“I am looking forward to presenting our donation to Michael to support SOS.”
