A new course launched at Keele will put students in a prime position for a career in the ever-expanding renewable energy sector. 

Decarbonising the world’s energy systems is a pivotal challenge for society, with recent world events and extreme weather due to climate change highlighting how precarious our reliance on fossil fuels is. 

Keele is leading the higher-education sector at the forefront of the move towards renewable energy, with our own renewable energy park providing up to 50% of our campus’ electricity, and have now launched a new degree to help the next generation in their efforts to build a more sustainable world.  

Practical and employable skills 

The Physics with Renewable Energy (BSc) undergraduate degree will give students not only the scientific and practical knowledge of how these systems and technologies work, but also the critical thinking and digital skills to help them thrive in their future careers.  

As well as studying the physical science behind wave, wind, solar, and geothermal energy sources, and the material science of renewable energy technologies and storage solutions, students will also learn programming, problem-solving, and digital skills to give them a competitive edge in this evolving field.

Course Director Professor Robin Jeffries said: “Physicists are leading the way in designing and implementing the energy networks of the future and researching new techniques and technologies.  

“This course, based on the solid foundation of an accredited single honours physics programme, is for those who want a head start into the application of physics in solving problems that are of local, national and global importance.”
