Keele staff and students care for sick pilgrims on their annual trip to Lourdes
Staff and students from Keele University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences have been providing round-the-clock care for assisted pilgrims from Birmingham Diocese making their annual spiritual journey to Lourdes.
As part of an annual tradition for healthcare staff at Keele, the group made up of both academics and students from Keele’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, and Allied Health Professions, accompanied pilgrims on their flights making their annual journey to the historic holy site in south-western France. They were accompanied on the journey by colleagues from local NHS trusts including University Hospitals of North Midlands.
Professor Julie Green, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Keele, said: “For the sixth year, Keele staff and students have supported the Birmingham Medical, Nursing and Care Team to care for assisted pilgrims.
“This year, a group of 38 travelled to cover shifts, accompany pilgrims to attend services and devotions and to enjoy this stunningly beautiful area. Staff and students worked together across the 24-hour period on a range of shifts.
“For the first year, students from the School of Allied Health Professions joined this established elective for School of Nursing and Midwifery students. Our students were amazing, fully engaged with the activities whilst on and off duty. Many friendships were made.”
