Same-sex weddings at Keele University Chapel

The Chapel at Keele University has gained permission from the Registrar General’s Office to allow same-sex weddings to take place there.
The Revd Simon Sutcliffe, Free Church Chaplain at Keele University, said:
“Our Chapel community is very diverse, enriched by people of all ages and many nationalities, and includes significant numbers who are LGBTQ+. We value this diversity and seek to make the chapel a safe and inclusive place for all.
“I am therefore delighted that the Chapel is now registered for same sex marriages as well as marriages between a man and a woman.”
Students and staff at Keele, both past and present, are welcome to explore holding a wedding in the Chapel.
Built in 1965, the Keele University Chapel was the first building in the UK to be designed specifically as an ecumenical chapel, accommodating services by different Christian traditions.
Three of the churches that partner in Keele Chapel (Methodist, United Reformed, and Baptist) are now able to conduct same sex marriages within their traditions, and as such same-sex weddings at Keele Chapel will be conducted by The Revd Simon Sutcliffe as Free Church Chaplain.
The Roman Catholic Church and Church of England do not allow for same sex marriages within their traditions, and so no Anglican or Catholic same sex marriages can take place at Keele or elsewhere.
