Biography
Professor Christian Mallen trained in medicine in Nottingham, qualifying in 1998. He moved to Stoke-on-Trent to train as a GP and has never left. He joined Keele University in 2001 as an academic GP trainee and subsequently completed master’s degrees and a PhD in Primary Care Epidemiology.
His research interests relate to improving the diagnosis and management of common musculoskeletal and rheumatological disorders in primary care. He also leads programmes of work focusing on multimorbidity and global health.
He is the only GP to have been awarded 3 successive research fellowships from Arthritis Research UK (now Versus Arthritis) and was awarded a prestigious NIHR Research Professorship in 2014. He is currently NIHR Senior Investigator and national director of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.
Before being appointed Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences at Keele University in January 2024 he was Dean of Keele University School of Medicine. He works closely with NHS and Care Partners and is Associate Director of Research and Innovation at Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and a local GP.
