Ages and Stages team participate in royal visit to Keele
Members of the Ages and Stages research team, together with participants in the study, were invited to speak about the project with his Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex, KG GCVO, when he visited Keele University on Tuesday May 3rd 2011. Prince Edward was at Keele to get an overview of the University and see a range of research and teaching activities designed to change social attitudes towards older people.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Nick Foskett, gave Prince Edward an overview of Keele, introduced the University’s ‘Active Ageing’ developments and accompanied His Royal Highness around four groups, giving him the opportunity to meet those directly involved and hear about their work.
Taking part on behalf of the Ages and Stages research team were Professor Miriam Bernard (project leader) and Ms Jill Rezzano (Head of the New Vic Theatre Education Department and co-investigator). They were accompanied by three participants who have been interviewed for the project: Mrs Romy Cheeseman (former actress; wife of the late Director Peter Cheeseman and member of the project’s Advisory Group); Mrs Barbara Salt (Vic volunteer) and Mr Albert Cooper (one of the original sources for the 1974 social documentary, ‘Fight for Shelton Bar!’).
The Ages and Stages research team have spent the last 18 months analysing material at the Victoria Theatre Collection, housed at Staffordshire University, and interviewing older people who have been involved with the New Vic’s work. In the final year of the project, we will work with the New Vic Youth Theatre and older people to create a social documentary performance and an exhibition based on the research, which will take place at the New Vic Theatre in July 2012 and will also be toured round local schools and community centres.
