Biography
I am currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Health and Rehabilitation and in this role I support the ongoing development and delivery of the Practice Educators’ Programme. I also continue to be active in roles at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and am currently a member of CSP Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee. I also act as a CSP External Examiner and a CSP Visitor and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Before beginning my career in education I was a senior clinical physiotherapist for 13 years, specialising in critical care at both Coventry and Shrewsbury Hospitals. I moved into teaching in 1986 after completing an education programme at Wolverhampton University and, as a Senior Teacher at the Oswestry and North Staffordshire School of Physiotherapy, I had responsibility for the Clinical Education element of the Physiotherapy programme. I also completed my Masters in Education at Manchester University. I relocated to Keele when the School of Physiotherapy transferred to the University in 1994 and, as Head of Undergraduate Programmes, I led the development of the innovative, semesterised and modularised BSc(Hons) programme implemented in 1995.
As a member of the School of Health and Rehabilitation for 20 years, I have undertaken a wide range of School roles and was Head of School of Health and Rehabilitation for 10 years. As Head of School I led the revision and approval of the Physiotherapy BSc(Hons) programme and development of the Keele Practice Educator and Accredited Practice Educator (APE) programmes. I also enabled and supported development of the postgraduate taught portfolio in the School and supported staff research/scholarship activity both in the School and in the Primary Care and Health Sciences Research Institute.
Within the wider University I have undertaken the roles of Associate Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Faculty Learning and Teaching Director (FL&TD) for Health. In the post of FL&TD I led the development of a University wide, three year Interprofessional Education Programme (IPE) across nine health and social care disciplines.
Prior to my retirement in 2013, I was Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Education and Student Experience. The role encompassed the whole student experience including the students’ academic experience, their extra-curricular activities and the wider campus / off-campus student experience. As PVC I was a member of the University Senior Executive and University Senate and contributed to the strategic direction and development of the wider University during a time of significant change in higher education.
I was absolutely delighted to be awarded a Fellowship of the CSP in 2006 and a personal chair at Keele, Professor of Professional Education in Health, in 2007.
