Biography

Maxine is a Senior Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy. She is a paediatric Speech and Language Therapist who has worked in various settings including mainstream and special schools. Her most recent clinical experience focussed on integrating speech and language therapy into psychiatric and forensic services for young people.

She completed an MRes and a PhD in Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester. Maxine went on to complete two post-doctoral appointments at other HEIs before joining Keele University in 2023.

She has also published recent research relating to the prevalence of developmental language disorder, socioemotional difficulties, and alexithymia in the young offender population. Additionally, she has considered the predictive ability of undiagnosed Developmental Language Disorder in relation to rates of recidivism. Maxine has also conducted secondary analysis on the Manchester Language Study data considering the long term effects of diagnosed Developmental Language Disorder.

Maxine's main research interests include:

• The prevalence of unidentified Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in youth offending populations and the impact of this using data driven quantitative methodological approaches, such as Kaplan-Meier survival models and Cox regression survival analysis.
• Examining the associations of unidentified DLD with reoffending, independent of characteristics known to be associated with recidivism.
• Detailing associations among language abilities, literacy, alexithymia, internalising, and externalising disorders in young offenders.
• Distal effects of childhood identification and intervention for DLD in relation to crime.

Maxine is the Programme Director for the MSci Speech and Language Therapy and she teaches across many different modules on the programme.
