Biography

Dr. Pooya Davoodi is a lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the School of Pharmacy and Bioengineering at Keele University (August 2020-now). He received his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2016. He did two years of Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical Engineering at NUS before joining the University of Cambridge as a research associate in Nov. 2018.

Over the past years, his research has focused on the synthesis and functionalisation, chemical characterisation and biological evaluation of polymeric biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering. He has also been working on the development of micro-patterned tissue constructs using 3D bioprinting, electrospraying and electrospinning techniques.

My current research fucoses on three major areas I) Advanced Biomaterials To synthesise new biopolymers with stimuli-responsive properties suitable for on-demand and programmed drug delivery and tissue engineering. II) Drug Delivery To fabricate smart micro-/nano-particulate structures: A) to control the release of therapeutic agents at the site of action (e.g. cancer tumor) B) to provide a biomimetic extracellular microenvironment for promoting cell growth and differentiation via the controlled release of biochemicals and biomolecules (growth factors, proteins, DNA, etc.) III) Additive Manufacturing and 3D Bioprinting To develop and integrate macro-/micro-/nano-fabrication technologies for the design and fabrication of 3D tissue constructs and advanced drug delivery systems. We will use 3D bioprinting, electrospinning, and electrohydrodynamic atomization to fabricate: A) complex tissue architectures recapitulating important features of diseases and organ tissues in vivo B) novel drug delivery systems The technologies that we will develop have the potential to further apply for various organ tissue models with applications in personalised medicine.
