Biography

Full time clinical practice as a consultant Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon at UHNM since 2009, plus a keen interest in basic science and clinical studies, offers a valuable perspective on research that is clinically relevant and useful for day-to-day clinical practice.

Research and scholarship

Research collaboration with Professor Ying Yang (ISTM) has centred on developing a new technique to grow bone nodules using mesenchymal stem cells. This has potential application in clinical practice as an alternative to currently available bone grafts. I am co-supervisor for a PhD student involved in this project. Funding has been secured, several papers have been published and commercial partners are being sought.

My research background also involves developing a materials testing laboratory in Liverpool during my Spinal Fellowship, for testing various spinal implants and also kinematics assessment of scapho-lunate instability in wrists.

I am also involved in a clinical research project involving multiple myeloma and back pain at the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) for which funding is being sought.
