School of Geography, Geology and the Environment

Our programmes deal with topics ranging from the physical structure of the planet to the organisational structures of human activity. So whether you are interested in global environmental change, culture dynamics, or natural hazards and resources, our undergraduate and postgraduate courses offer you the opportunity to explore aspects of geography, geology, environmental science, sustainability, and natural sciences that most appeal to you. Our mission is to ensure that our research-led courses prepare students for careers that address the most significant challenges facing society today.

Welcome from the Head of School

Professor Clare Holdsworth

Professor Clare Holdsworth, Head of the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment

A big hello from the School of Geography, Geology and the Environment. Nestled within the 600-acre university campus, our School specialises in learning about planet earth, its systems and processes, its inhabitants, and how these interact. Our taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes provide a variety of learning journeys through the disciplines of geography, geology and
the environment.

We work across these disciplines to unravel the stories of our planet through deep time to modern day. We investigate how the earth formed and evolved into the planet we live on today. How current and past processes and systems work, and contribute to future modeling, policy and planning. Climate change and sustainability are just two of the grand challenges our teaching and learning explore.

We are a broad School, and the perfect place to study the aspect of the planet that interests you the most; be that earth structure and processes, modern landforms, oceans, society or the animals we live with (and many other aspects). Our staff are active researchers across a range of specialisms, and we work hard to ensure our research is embedded, and translates, into our teaching and learning. We use state of the art teaching environments and methods; recently we have developed and invested in our use of the campus for teaching as a living lab. What better way to learn about lakes, forests, flying drones, renewable energy, geophysics, biodiversity (and loads of other stuff!) than by doing it using equipment and analysing your own data all in an authentic environment.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Keele to begin your journey unravelling the stories of our planet.
