Professor Nick Seager, Head of the School of Humanities

As an offer holder in the School of Humanities, you’ll be studying one of the rich, engaging, and challenging subjects that we offer within the School: English Literature, Creative Writing, History, Film Studies, Media and Communications, or Music Production and Sound Design. As you can tell from this list of subjects, studying in the School of Humanities gives you lots of opportunities to branch out into other subjects, making fruitful connections between them, whether you are studying single honours or combined honours. We pride ourselves on giving students choice and flexibility, so that you can develop a range of interests. This extends to other things that you may have the opportunity to explore as part of your degree; for example, depending on your course, as an undergraduate student you may be eligible to take a work placement with academic support, study abroad at one of our global partners, learn a language or learn to teach English as a secondary language, choose one of Keele's exciting Global Challenges Pathways, applying knowledge to real-world problems. Your tutors support you throughout your journey.

Our subjects are diverse and distinctive, but several things unite them as well as those opportunities named above. First, we're focused on developing you across your time at Keele with a view to employment or further training/study after you graduate. This means we support your acquisition of skills including critical thinking, original research, digital proficiency, communication, and resilience. Second, teaching in the School is always underpinned by research: the approximately 40 academics in the School are active researchers or creative practitioners, and they bring that specialist knowledge to the classroom. Third, we have embraced the opportunity to decolonise our curriculum, which means opportunities to study traditional and canonical subjects and texts as well as the chance to engage with less familiar voices and perspectives from around the world.

If you have any questions about the content of your course, such as if you want to discuss modules available or reading lists, don't hesitate to get in touch with the relevant Programme Director (or both if you are taking an undergraduate combined degree):
