Welcome from the Head of School
Professor Christian Mallen, Head of the School of Medicine
Congratulations on receiving an offer to study in the School of Medicine at Keele.
As Head of School, I would like to tell you something about who we are and what we do. You have the opportunity to join a diverse, innovative and multi-professional School where you will work and learn alongside a variety of healthcare, social care and education professionals to develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours you will need in your future career.
The School of Medicine offers three undergraduate degree programmes: medicine, a ground-breaking paramedic science integrated master’s, and social work. We also offer postgraduate programmes in physician associate studies, clinical education, counselling and psychotherapy and social work, in addition to various specialist areas of medical science and practice. This means the students in the School cover a wide range of aspects of patient care and support as well as public health research and interventions. All of these programmes share an ethos of producing excellent health and care practitioners who will make a positive contribution to the care and support of people with health and social needs, both on an individual level and at a community- and population-wide level. You will learn the necessary academic material in the context of real healthcare and social issues and develop relevant skills from early in your course.
You will learn from practitioners as well as clinical, behavioural and social scientists, so everything you learn will be directly relevant to the career you wish to pursue. Keele has an international reputation for research excellence in the fields of global health, neuroscience, cardiology, mental health and musculoskeletal disorders, with world-leading experts contributing to the content and delivery of your course. Depending on your programme, you will use state-of-the-art facilities such as our Anatomy and Surgical Training Centre and undertake placements within numerous services across the region, where you will experience the reality of front-line practice and grow into a professional ready to join the workforce after graduation.
Our recent achievements, to highlight but a few, include leading the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research School for Primary Care Research, being awarded European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology Centre of Excellence status and being ranked 1st in the UK for our commitment to planetary health.
I hope to welcome you to Keele soon.
