Prunus 'Hanagasa'

[Syn: Prunus lannesiana Wilson cv. Hanagasa]

It is a new introduction to the UK in 2000, sold under the trade name of "Pink Parasol".

It was raised by Mr Masatoshi Asari in Matsumae at the southern tip of Hokkaido, Northern Japan by hybridizing P. ‘Fukurokuju’ with a Sato-zakura. It was originally listed as 'Matsumae hanagasa'.

A small to medium sized tree to 5m. The branches become pendulous with age. The flowers are large double, pale to mid-pink with a green centre on long stems. The leaves start off a coppery colour before turning green and then yellowish in autumn.
