Prunus sargentii Sargent's Cherry
Introduced to Britain from Japan, via America, in 1908.
The flowers are pink with a darker centre, 30mm across and open before the coppery-red foliage in early April. The oval leaves change to dark green as they mature but in autumn they are vivid reds and oranges.
It forms an upright spreading tree growing to 8m and 5m across.
