Butterflies of Keele
Small Heath Coenonympha pamphilus
Like the , a this is typical grassland butterfly.
The adults have a rather weak, floppy, flight and rarely, if ever, sit with their wings open.
The larvae feed on various grasses and the adults are on the wing from June to October.
It used to be not uncommon here, especially in the lower and more open parts of campus but I have not seen it for many years so it may now be absent.
