Sightings in 2003
29th December : A flock of up to 145 Golden Plover on fields between the Hall and the M6 (N. Carter).
27th December : 2 Ravens were seen flying over campus.
18th November : A Wigeon was seen on the top lake, below Keele Hall - a first for the University.
6th October : first Redwings of the autumn heard overhead.
5th October : 10 Golden Plover and a flock of 20+ Sky Larks on harvested maize fields between bottom of campus and the M6.
1st October : Crossbill flew south over campus.
19th September : A Spotted Redshank flew over campus, calling. This is the first record for Keele.
10th July : A Wheatear was seen on the Sports Field. This may have been a dispersing juvenile from a first brood.
27th May : A Lesser Whitethroat was seen by the tennis courts. The last record was in 1977.
14th May : A Cuckoo flew over the entrance to the university. The species is rare here.
25th March : a Woodcock was found dead by the Library - it probably flew into a window. Sightings of Woodcock are few at Keele.
24th March : a flock of 200 Golden Plover and 50 Lapwings was on ploughed land between Keele Farm and The M6; just west of Clock House Drive.
17th January : A Woodcock was seen flying over the day nursery.
16th January : A male Firecrest was seen on campus, off and on, into February. This is the second record, the last being on 1/1/1984.
