Located on Keele University Science and Innovation Park, renewable heating and green energy solutions company Noreus utilised the University’s innovation research programme to gain a head start in new sectors.

Noreus has a wealth of experience in green energy solutions and, using methods such as thermodynamics, they are identifying key heat or energy losses within buildings and then applying the latest technologies in solar and smart insulation to reduce this loss by up to 60% in both domestic and commercial spaces.

Passionate about the education of energy saving, Ron Fox, Director of Noreus, approached Keele for support in developing an in-depth research report on the impact of environmental awareness in the education sector with a view of pushing for the inclusion of more green teaching in the curriculum.

The Keele Research and Innovation Support Programme (KRISP)* provided Noreus with access to academics and business advisors who worked alongside two Environmental Science students, employed as Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) Associates, to progress the project.

Research completed as part of the project indicated that individuals who are taught about environmental issues can go on to save up to 20% in energy costs in both a company and a school environment.

Commenting on the results, Ron said: “Educating people through practical experiences at a young age is key. We want to see the energy-saving solutions that are being implemented on buildings such as schools are also educating the staff and students, driving them to makes changes in their behaviour such as turning lights off when not in use.”

Speaking about his experience of working with Keele, Ron added: “I have been really impressed with the work produced from KRISP. It has opened us up to conversations we may not have had otherwise and we are now able to educate a wider range of clients and sectors.

“We will definitely use Business Gateway support again, and will also strongly consider Keele students in our future recruitment – having staff who have a strong environmental science background and the ability to bring new ideas forward from day one is a great benefit.

“As we continue to grow, we are working with a number of clients all over the UK and being based in the Midlands on the Keele University Science and Innovation Park is ideal for us.”
