Keele Scientists at the British Society for Parasitology Annual Meeting
Keele's Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology (CAEP) was well-represented at this year’s annual meeting of the British Society for Parasitology (BSP).
The meeting was held at Liverpool's Echo Arena - the first BSP meeting at a professional conference venue rather than a university. ~400 delegates attended from as far afield as the USA, the Middle East and Africa for 3 days of plenary lectures, research seminars and social activities. Highlights included an excellent 'Question Time' panel, chaired by Peter Sissons, on the topic of Conflict, environment & Ebola: Barriers to parasite control and elimination, which was open to the public. There was also an impressive selection of keynote seminars and an excellent plenary from Dr Julian Rayner, recipient of this year's Wright Medal from the BSP.
From Keele, Imran Ullah and Ashley Jordan - both final-year PhD students in the groups of Dr Paul Horrocks and Dr Catherine Merrick - gave talks. There were also poster presentations from Dr Helen Price, Lecturer in Biosciences, and from students Nana Andoh in Dr Chakravorty’s lab and Katelyn Monsell in Dr Merrick's lab. Many of the attendees enjoyed the Young Parasitologists Party and the Gala Dinner held as part of the social programme. At the BSP AGM, Paul Horrocks also re-joined the BSP council as an ordinary member, while Catherine Merrick took over the role of Honorary Communications Secretary for the society.
