Local MP visits Keele Biologists

Paul Farrelly, MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, visited the School of Life Sciences on the 9th of January to meet researchers working on cancer and and the tropical diseases malaria and leishmaniasis.
His visit follows from an invitation extended by Dr Helen Price (Faculty of Natural Sciences) and Dr Paul Horrocks (Faculty of Health), following their presentation last September in Westminster Palace to the All Party Parliamentary Group for malaria and neglected tropical diseases (APPMG). This group is chaired by Jeremy Lefroy, MP for Stafford.
During his visit, Paul Farrelly had the opportunity to tour research facilities in the Huxley building, including Containment Level 3 laboratories used for human pathogen work. He also discussed the role and impact of Keele University within the local community. During a round-table discussion, a range of topics including Higher Education funding, voter registration for Higher Education students, the recent HEFCE STEM award for Life Sciences and Keele's recent excellent results in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) were discussed. Paul Farrelly said "I would like to thank the staff from Keele University for an interesting and thought-provoking visit.
