Emergency SMS alerts

Our new Emergency SMS Alert System allows the University to send text message alerts to staff and students in a critical emergency, such as a major fire, flood, or where people are in immediate danger on campus.

Test SMS alert, 13 November 2024 at 12pm

At 12pm on Wednesday 13 November, all staff and students will receive a test emergency SMS alert from Keele University.

This will be a test message

You will not need to take any action.

What will the message say?

The SMS message will say:

This is a test message from Keele University Emergency SMS Alerts. No action needed. More info: keele.ac.uk/sms-alerts

Why is this new SMS alert system being installed?

Our new Emergency SMS Alert System allows the University to send text message alerts to all staff and students in a critical emergency, such as a major fire, flood, or where people are in immediate danger on campus. This is a requirement of the new Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, also known as ‘Martyn’s Law’, which is currently being passed through Parliament.

Alerts will only be sent in a critical emergency.

Do I need to do anything beforehand?

Please check that your mobile number is up to date - Colleagues can check or update their mobile phone number by logging into the Employee Self-Service section of Keele People and clicking the ‘My Profile’ button.

Students can check or update their mobile phone number by logging into eVision and reviewing the personal details section.

If you want to opt-out of receiving SMS messages in an emergency situation, please complete this form. Please note, if you out-out after 2:30pm on 12 November, you may still receive the test SMS alert on 13 November.

If you have any further questions, please email comms.internal@keele.ac.uk.
