Description for 2021/22

This 15 credit module covers solid state and surface chemistry, with an introduction to heterogeneous catalysis. The module builds on material taught at FHEQ Level 5, and provides students with an introduction to modern materials chemistry, including the characterisation and design of materials for specific applications.

Aims
This module aims to develop the principles of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry introduced at FHEQ Level 5 and covers basic solid state and surface chemistry, together with an introduction to heterogeneous catalysis.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Coursework weighted 75%
Data Analysis Exercise
Students will be allocated individual sets of experimental data relevant to one or more topics presented in the module. They will analyse the data using specialised spectroscopic software and prepare an extended report (equivalent to 3000 words), which would require interpretation and critical analysis of the provided research data and comparison with the published literature results.

2: Coursework weighted 25%
Problem sheets
Problem solving questions (equivalent to ~1250 words effort) assessing students ability to apply and synthesise ideas from the taught content to the analysis of chemical, physical and structural properties of materials and solid surfaces.
