Description for 2021/22

This module aims to develop the Chinese language skills acquired up to Chinese 4. It will develop students Chinese language communication skills, enabling them to speak, listen, read and write in carrying out simple and routine tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying or travelling in China. After successful completion of the module students should be able to carry out simple tasks requiring an exchange of information on familiar topics in reading short, simple texts written in Chinese characters, understanding phrases and vocabularies related to areas of immediate personal relevance, use a series of phrases and sentences to describe their environment in daily routines, weather and seasons and clothes to wear. Ask for and give directions and suggestions to a place. Write a simple passage about Chinese festivals using basic Chinese characters. Recognize and act upon cultural differences encountered in everyday situations and demonstrate knowledge of cultural traditions in Chinese New Year.

20 hours of synchronous and asynchronous class time

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Chinese language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 5-6 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive) and listening (receptive) skills. Task may include role play, presentation, question and answer, description and similar. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups individual marks will be awarded to each student and the total time allowed will be 5-6 minutes per student.

2: Exam weighted 50%
1 hour reading/writing
Examination testing writing and reading skills and the command of active and passive vocabulary from the topic areas studied.
