Description for 2021/22

This module will help students to develop and refine the specific writing, reading and verbal communication skills they will need to succeed in their science degree studies. Through a series of workshops, lectures, assignments, online and practical tasks and projects, students will improve their ability to write reports and essays in an appropriate manner, deliver academic presentations, and take part in academic discussions.

Aims
To improve the language skills necessary for the academic success of identified non-native English speaking students, and to help these students develop an active academic vocabulary.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 70%
Portfolio of writing tasks
Students will produce three writing tasks to demonstrate comprehension and summary of source material through the planning and completion of an essay plan, essay draft and final version of a 1000 word essay.

2: Coursework weighted 30%
10-minute presentation
Students will prepare and deliver a 10 minute individual academic presentation, based on a theme covered during the class sessions or linked to their core area of study. Student will produce a PowerPoint Presentation of 10-15 slides. Students will be assessed on the organisation, appropriacy and accuracy of their presentation slides, the language used when delivering presentations, and the fluency and accuracy of their spoken English.
