Description for 2021/22

This module is designed for students who have completed French 5 (or equivalent) and will develop advanced communication skills in everyday situations such as talking about daily routine, socialising and food, family, the home as well as in more complex situations, such as discussing a range of topical issues in French or understanding the French media.
This module will further develop French language communication skills enabling students to speak, listen, read and write, by carrying out tasks they are likely to encounter when socialising, travelling or working in French speaking countries. These competences are further developed and built upon by moving beyond the situations of everyday life to more challenging topics (eg media and politics) and will introduce a more complex grammatical structure characteristic of formal written French. In conjunction with the textbook audio,video and online material will be used to consolidate vocabulary, grammatical structures and themes dealt with in class.
The language level of this module corresponds to work leading to Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR- B1).

This course aims to consolidate existing language skills and further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as general language learning skills.
The course is also designed to offer insights into cultural aspects of contemporary France and of the French speaking world.

Intended Learning Outcomes

understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear: 1
enter unprepared into conversation on topics such as travel and current events. Student can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken: 1,2

Study hours

20 hours of synchronous and asynchronous class time
100 hours class preparation and revision and private study
22 hours revision for and completion of written exam
8 hours preparation for and attendance at spoken interaction exam

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are allowed to undertake only one French module per semester.
