Description for 2021/22

This module complements the programme content introduced in Level 4 and Level 5 in relation to human physiology. The focus of this module is advanced physiology relevant to rehabilitation; it will develop the student's understanding of the physiological processes that underpin rehabilitation in key body systems such as the cardiovascular, neurological and musculoskeletal systems. Prominent physiological responses to conditions such as exercise, stress and ageing will be analysed in the context of rehabilitation.

Aims
1. To deepen the student's knowledge and understanding of human physiology, relevant to rehabilitation, with a focus on the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
2. To deepen the student's knowledge and understanding of the body's physiological responses to inactivity, physical activity and exercise, ageing, injury and disease.
3. To develop the student's understanding of energy systems that are required for body function.

Intended Learning Outcomes

analyse in depth the physiological responses of the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory systems in relation to physical activity and exercise;: 1,

critically discuss the ageing process with reference to each key body system and apply this to the principles of rehabilitation;: 1,

analyse and synthesise the contribution of body energy systems in relation to health and function;: 1,

critically analyse the physiology of host defence with reference to inflammation and tissue repair;: 1,

within the context of key pathologies, critically discuss the impact of pathophysiology for rehabilitation;: 1,

deconstruct and analyse the physiological response to stress in relation to health and wellbeing.: 1,

Description of Module Assessment

1: Exam weighted 100%
2 hour written exam (Part seen/part unseen)
A written examination to assess students' knowledge and understanding of human physiology and pathophysiology relevant to rehabilitation. The examination will include Section A consisting of unseen short answer questions and Section B consisting of seen long answer exam questions, with a choice of two out of five questions to be answered.
