Description for 2021/22

The aim of this module is to commence the student's professional development through engagement with learning activities and University services that will familiarise the students with the requirements of being a student of a Health or Social Care Profession. Students will be introduced to evidence based practice focusing on how assessment and measurement contribute to this evidence and applied in a practice environment. Students will learn about common assessment and measurement tools used in practice and the relevance of different types of data (qualitative, quantitative) and levels of measurement together with the psychometric properties of measurement / diagnostic tools.

Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce the student's knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and measurement;enable the student to transfer this knowledge and understanding to begin to critically evaluate commonly used measures in health; introduce the student to the concept of evidence in guiding practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

recognise the role of evidence based practice in health and the contribution of measurement and assessment: 1,2,3,4
identify the commonly used outcome measures and diagnostic tests in radiography and health research: 1,4
manage, begin to analyse and compare data from commonly used measures or tests in health, taking validity and reliability into consideration: 1
demonstrate introductory skills in finding and critical reading of relevant introductory literature and comment on the quality of both the process and the product of this activity: 1
explain the basic types of data (qualitative, quantitative) and the basic properties of data (normal distribution and levels of measurement): 1

Study hours

This module is made up of 60 hours of scheduled learning and teaching activity to include lectures, workshops, and tutorials, using a blended learning approach. The student will have opportunity to undertake formative assessment.
It is anticipated that study hours will include approximately 63 hours of practice experience. This is derived from a total of 375 hours, averaged across all six assessed modules in year 1.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Report weighted 100%
A two part report: Part A - 1,500 words (80% of mark) and Part B: 500 word report (20% of mark)
A two part report where Part A (1,500 words) describes a research proposal for a small research project to be submitted in the January examination period while results and a 500 word discussion is submitted in the May assessment period. NB: The procedure will be selected from a predefined list.

Portfolio B: Radiographic Competency
Assesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to assessment of specific radiographic practice competencies undertaken during Practice Experience.

Assesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to the six mandatory clinical assessments undertaken during Practice Experience.
