Description for 2021/22

Being able to speak Spanish, the official language in 23 countries and the second language in USA, can open up a whole new world whether that means travelling in South America, making the most of holidays in Spain or using language skills to get a better job. Spain is one of the UK 's major trading partners. Whatever the career Spanish skills will help to get more from life.
This module is designed for students with quite limited prior knowledge of Spanish (e.g. Spanish 1, or equivalent). It will develop basic communication skills- listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. On a more general level, it will enhance intercultural skills, and in addition students will also be introduced to some aspects of Spanish culture: traditions and customs, and culture specific behaviour.
The emphasis will be on oral communication skills through the use of role plays, pair work and short presentations in small groups. Students will also develop their reading and writing skills in Spanish. The course book will give a basic outline and structure to the course and the book will be supplemented by regular video work and other materials. There will also be the opportunity to practise and reinforce vocabulary and language structures by using computer exercises in KLE, linked to the weekly classes.
By successfully completing this module, students should be able to conduct simple short conversations about themselves, family, friends, daily life, leisure time activities etc. To express reasons, future intentions and plans, and to talk about their linguistic skills, etc. They should also be able to describe places, existence and location.
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be working towards level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR - A1)

This module aims to improve student¿s written, reading, oral and listening language skills acquired in Spanish 1; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become more efficient language learners.

Study hours

20 hours of synchronous and asynchronous class time
100 hours class preparation and revision and private study
22 hours revision for and completion of written exam
8 hours preparation for and attendance at spoken interaction exam

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Spanish language module per semester.
This module cannot be taken as a Level 3 elective.
