This module is designed to provide rigorous training in practical and professional chemistry skills that are necessary for laboratory classes throughout the course. The range of learning activities and assessments are designed to initiate progress towards the development of Keele's Graduate Attributes with emphasis on communication (oral and written), information literacy, professionalism, problem solving and collaborative work.
Aims
To develop essential preparative and analytical laboratory skills.To equip students with the ability to communicate experimental procedures, findings, data and conclusions through appropriate scientific media.To equip students with experience in data analysis and problem solving.To develop awareness of safety and sustainability implications in the chemistry laboratory. To develop team working skills and the ability to recognise the roles necessary for successful team work.To initiate progress towards the development of Keele¿s Graduate Attributes with a particular emphasis on high standards of record keeping, communication (oral and written), information literacy and presentation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Description of Module Assessment
1: Laboratory Book weighted 40%Lab diaryStudents will write up each experiment in their lab diaries, of which a selection will be marked. This will also include COSHH (health & safety) assessments and pre-lab work. This assessment will be equivalent to 4000 words, and lab diaries will be submitted at the end of each semester.
2: Report weighted 30%Lab reportStudents will produce Word-processed lab report sections and a full lab report based on lab practicals, equivalent to 3000 words.
3: Practical Exam weighted 20%Practical examIn-lab assessment (~1.5 hours) of practical skills
4: Presentation weighted 10%PresentationStudents will give a 5-7 minute oral account of a lab practical.
