Description for 2022/23

This module puts sustainable chemistry within a global context, looking at processes and technology that influence everyday life. The use of chemistry in human processes and the associated environmental implications will be analysed. Issues surrounding the sustainability of chemical processes form key aspects of the course content with students developing problem solving, information retrieval, team working and communication skills.

Aims
To develop knowledge and understanding of issues in sustainable chemistry.
To develop a range of problem solving, team working, and written communication skills.
To discuss and critique key aspects of sustainability underpinning the role of chemistry in society.

Talis Aspire Reading List
Any reading lists will be provided by the start of the course.

Intended Learning Outcomes

describe, explain and apply principles of sustainability to investigate and critically appraise case studies, solve problems and interpret data: 1
describe chemical processes and demonstrate awareness by describing and explaining key aspects of global environmental, financial and societal issues surrounding chemistry: 2
critique, describe and explain key aspects of sustainability underpinning the role of chemistry in society: 2
research, plan and write written reports for a specified audience on aspects of chemistry related to sustainability, demonstrating effective information retrieval and written communication skills and complying with standards of referencing and presentation in chemistry appropriate to FHEQ Level 5: 2
research aspects of sustainable chemistry using a variety of sources appropriate to the topic and reference sources using a consistent Vancouver reference format: 2
locate and summarise relevant peer reviewed scientific journals
: 1

Study hours

24 hours interactive lectures;
126 hours independent study and preparation of assessed work.

School Rules

Cap of 25 students.
Pre-requisite - A-level Chemistry or equivalent.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 40%
Portfolio
A series of tasks undertaken in preparation for taught sessions. Students will be required to summarise and reflect on 4 - 6 pre-sessional resources, producing a portfolio equivalent to 1500 words.

2: Report weighted 60%
Magazine-style report
Production of a magazine-style article on a topic in sustainable chemistry. This will be formatted in the style of a magazine article including figures, tables and pictures and references. Substantial research using peer-reviewed scientific literature is required to complete this task and distil the results of that research into a concise and accurate 1000 words appropriate for a specified audience. A formative article plan will be submitted for feedback on topic and structure (equivalent to 500 words) and students will note how they have used their feedback in the finished article.
