An opportunity to pursue a personal interest in computer science, learning and applying programming and technical skills that complement and extend those taught within the curriculum, under guidance from staff with experience in the chosen specialism.
Aims
To provide supported, independent learning and practice of skills (such as expertise in specific programming languages or paradigms, or ¿state-of-the-art computing approaches used in industrial and research organisations) that are not otherwise incorporated in the curriculum.
Intended Learning Outcomes

4 hours lecture/training related to the poster, presentation and demonstration.¿12 hours consultation with staff sponsor, reviewing plans, learning and skills acquisition.An indicative breakdown of the 134 hours of private study would be 20 hours planning and identifying sources and resources; 80 hours developing skills through completion of the project; 34 hours preparing and delivering poster, presentation and demonstration.
Students will be asked to complete an online form, in which they state the area of study, outline how they intend to develop the necessary learning and skills, and propose a project that will allow them to demonstrate their learning and skills.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Coursework weighted 40%PosterThe poster will present the target of learning and the project created. The outcomes of the project and learning achieved will be summarised, along with a record of tools and sources used.
The students' posters are displayed in the department, and students asked to give a short presentation (15min) as at a conference.
2: Coursework weighted 60%PresentationThe student will prepare a presentation and demonstration of their project. The presentation will give the context for the project, including the skills acquired and learning achieved. The demonstration requires the student to demonstrate the products of their project (programme, state of the art technique application). ¿
The presentation's length is 20 minutes. The demonstration lasts 30 minutes.
