Description for 2022/23

Aims
This module will provide further opportunities for Humanities students to engage with employers at the same time as they are entering the jobs marketplace. The module will:
- Further enhance the career knowledge and employability of students studying Humanities subjects;
- Support students in effectively researching and applying for employment roles, just at the point where they are thinking about their steps after graduation;
- Provide students with first-hand experience of the day-to-day operations of a relevant working environment, including developing their ability to work co-operatively and productively with others;
- Encourage students to apply and reflect on the range of degree-relevant skills they have developed through the course of their degree in a broader work context;
- Develop students¿ capacity to construct and carry through independent tasks/projects, particularly their ability to apply their research skills to solving problems in new environments;
- Increase students¿ knowledge of and familiarity with the University Careers Service immediately before they graduate.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 50%
Portfolio
Handed in at the end of the module, the portfolio will include evidence of any tasks undertaken on the placement including outputs, a commentary (c.500 words) contextualising those outputs, an attendance log and employer evaluation form, a reflective essay of 2,000 words, and an updated CV.

2: Presentation weighted 30%
Presentation
Later in semester 2, students will complete a 10-minute presentation to the cohort utilising visual aids. They will critically reflect on the activities/projects they have completed on placement utilising contextual/theoretical research, and on the skills they learnt/developed.

3: Assignment weighted 20%
Placement Plan
This assessment is submitted at the end of semester 1 and must be passed for students to proceed to semester 2 (if they don't pass then they can choose another Level 6 module in the place of this module). Students who HAVE NOT completed the Level 5 Work Placement module (ENG-20055) will complete a placement plan comprising: 1) the CV and cover letter they used to secure their placement; and 2) a form (c.300 words) including the intended learning outcomes they have agreed with their placement provider. Students who HAVE completed ENG-20055 in the previous year will complete a placement plan comprising: 1) a short 300-word essay on how their chosen placement will allow them to build on previous skills developed through their work placement or other extra-curricular experience and how their proposed placement will fit into their career path; and 2) a form (c.300 words) including the intended learning outcomes they have agreed with their placement provider. (The different assessment is to ensure fairness. Students who have had their CVs assessed before on ENG-20055 will not have them assessed again and are asked, instead, to think in detail about why they want to complete another placement.)
