Description for 2022/23

This module will help students strengthen the academic communication skills necessary for success in their degree studies. Students will gain understanding of the genres and conventions of academic writing, develop critical reading and discussion skills and improve their use of academic vocabulary.

Aims
To further enhance the key written and spoken communication skills of identified non-native English speaking students.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 60%
Five written assignments
Students will complete writing tasks of no more than 1,000 words to develop summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and essay writing skills.

2: Coursework weighted 20%
Seminar
Students will prepare for and participate in a seminar of up to 20 minutes, during which they will be assessed on their ability to present and support opinions and interact with their peers.

3: Coursework weighted 20%
Group Presentation
Students will deliver a presentation in pairs or groups (6 minutes per person) on a subject decided in consultation with the tutor.
