Description for 2022/23

Drawing on business-related themes, this module will help Keele Business School students to develop and refine the specific writing, reading and verbal communication skills they need to succeed in their studies. Through a series of classes, workshops, assignments, online and practical tasks, students will improve their ability to write academic essays and reports. Students will also develop the skills necessary to prepare and deliver academic presentations and take part in seminars. You will improve and develop transferable academic skills that can help you to succeed not only in this module, but also in your other business modules and future career.

To provide targeted English vocabulary and structures to enable students to engage more fully in their academic studies within Keele Business School.

School Rules

Open only to non-native speakers of English and successful completion of ENL-10031 (EAP 1) with a score of over 60%, or ENL-90006 (EAP 2), or equivalent or by recommendation of the Language Centre. Available to Y1 and Y2 students.
Barred combinations: any other ENL- module (English Language module) in the same academic year.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Portfolio weighted 70%
Portfolio
Students will write an essay of 1000 (+/-10%) words broken down into four linked writing tasks, for example, introduction, main body paragraphs, conclusion and reference list.

2: Coursework weighted 30%
Presentation
10-15 minute presentation based on a topic supplied by the tutor. Numbers per presentation to be determined by student numbers and/or mode of delivery. Students are required to produce a linguistically accurate PowerPoint using formal academic language and appropriate referencing within the slides. Presentation to be followed by a question and answer period.
