Description for 2022/23

'Volcanoes and the Environment' provides students with a systematic and comprehensive understanding of volcanic phenomena, and how volcanism shapes and affects the environment.

Aims
The aim of this module is to provide students with a systematic and comprehensive understanding of volcanic phenomena and processes, and how volcanism shapes and affects the environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

systematically describe and explain volcanic phenomena and processes operating on the journey of magma from its source to the atmosphere and the effect of volcanism on the environment: 1,2,3
deploy subject-specific skills and modern methods in volcanology to interpret volcanological data, and apply and critically evaluate these to the formulation and solution of a problem: 1,2,3
evaluate, integrate, and apply appropriate information from various sources on aspects of 'volcanoes and the environment' to create cohesive and persuasive scientific arguments that are communicated clearly in various forms: 1,2,3
apply computer-based, numeracy and information handling skills to solve volcanological problems in the widest sense: 1,2,3

Study hours

55 hours schedule teaching sessions (22 2.5-hour workshops, including one session for class test and three drop-in sessions for assessment preparation)

Description of Module Assessment

1: Case Study weighted 25%
Fact sheet
Students will produce a fact sheet containing both structured text and figures on a volcanological topic (case study). Length: 2 sides A4 (plus an additional page for references). An example will be provided in class.

2: Class Test weighted 50%
Class Test
A 2-hour long class test, assessing both theoretical aspects and practical work students completed over the course of the module on aspects of volcanic processes or the effects of volcanism on the environment.

3: Report weighted 25%
1,000 word illustrated report
Students will produce an illustrated report on aspects of volcanic processes or the effects of volcanism on the environment. The assessment will contain elements of data analysis, presentation and analysis. Indicative length: 1,000 words.
