Description for 2022/23

This module covers a wide range of modern spectroscopic and related techniques used for the chemical characterisation of forensic materials, methods of structural and elemental analysis, XRF, chromatography and mass spectrometry. It also provides experience of these techniques in the practical context.


Aims
The aim of the module is that students will use a wide range of modern spectroscopic and related techniques for the chemical characterisation of (forensic) materials, methods of structural and elemental analysis, chromatography and mass spectrometry. It aims to provide the experience of these techniques in the practical context.

The higher number of hours compared to CHE-20011 is due to the cohort being taught.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Exam weighted 40%
In person Open Book exam
A 2.5h, 100 marks, in-person, invigilated, PC-lab based, open book exam.

2: Portfolio weighted 60%
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT - EXPERIMENTAL TASKS
A portfolio equivalent to 3000-3500 words incorporating a number of assessments, such as laboratory reports, data analysis and collaborative team working.
