Description for 2022/23

This module will explore the way in which law, ethics and policy interrelate in the area of health care practice. It builds on earlier understanding acquired in diverse areas of law, including Criminal and Tort law. The module will seek to develop analytical understanding of health care law and encourage critical perspectives on the substantive areas covered. The module is particularly attractive to those with an interest in the interaction between ethics and law and the governance of the medical profession.

Aims
To explore the interrelationship of law, ethics and policy in a contested and rapidly expanding area of law.

Intended Learning Outcomes

identify, critique and contextualise the basic legal rules applying to health care law

devise and construct a critical analysis of the way in which the law seeks to govern the personal relation between doctor and patient: 1
identify and evaluate the need in the sector for a balance between the demands of the individual and of the state and how the law seeks to regulate that: 1

Essay - 3,000 words
A research based, critically informed essay with a word limit of 3,000 words (excluding footnotes)
