Description for 2022/23

This module focuses on the Multinational Corporation (MNC)and its management. In particular political-historical, cultural and language/communication related aspects will be examined through the use of empirical case studies. Appropriate theoretical frameworks will be used to identify the key skills and competences that managers and other agents in the MNC need to develop in order to manage it effectively.

Aims
To introduce students to the Multinational Corporation (MNC) as a key organisational form of international business;
To provide insights into the operational activities of an MNC;
To theorise MNCs from different perspectives (e.g. rational-economic; cultural, political);
To examine the key skills required by agents of the MNC to operate it effectively.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Assignment weighted 70%
An essay, based on empirical case studies discussed in class
Write a 1,000 ¿ 1,500-word essay (excluding references), based on at least two empirical case studies discussed in class, discussing the role of cultural diversity in international business. Your essay should include an appropriate use of international business literature and models discussed in class.

2: Assignment weighted 30%
A reflective essay based on identifying and discussing key competences and skills required for international management
Write an 800 ¿ 1,000-word reflective essay (excluding references), evaluating the notion that all international business interactions can be conducted in the English language. Your discussion needs to include reflections on the role of English in international business. You are advised to use an appropriate reflective model (i.e., Driscoll, John, Kolb or Gibb¿s reflective models).
