Description for 2022/23

Mathematics provides a language to discuss concepts and ideas in a formal setting. It is thus vital to develop the ability to reason logically and to recognise incorrect reasoning. This module will extend a range of mathematical skills and techniques and apply them in more difficult unstructured problems, using mathematics as an effective means of communication.
The module will develop skills in reading and comprehending mathematical arguments and and improve confidence and speed in finding correct solutions.
By the end of the module students will take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development.

Aims
This module gives a self-contained and intensive summary of the essential methods and techniques required for mathematics programmes. Students will acquire a sound foundation in those methods and techniques that they should have at their fingertips¿.

1: Assignment weighted 15%
Take home assignment
A set of tasks/questions, applying mathematical methods, concepts and techniques in algebra, logarithms and trigonometry.

2: Class Test weighted 15%
Class test
40 minutes class test on differentiation

3: Class Test weighted 70%
Class test
End of module class test. The class test covers the entire module content testing the ability to select and apply appropriate methods and techniques to solve problems.
