MAT-20004 Complex Variable I and Vector CalculusMAT-20008 Differential Equations
The module is a first course in fluid mechanics, designed for students with no previous knowledge of the subject. Although previous acquaintance with vectors and differential equations would be helpful, the lecturer will offer revision of the required parts of these subjects as the module progresses.
Aims
The aim of this module is to provide a first course in fluid mechanics and to study some of the many and varied applications of the theory.
Intended Learning Outcomes
demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts in fluid mechanics, including streamlines, streak lines and path lines, continuity, vorticity, boundary conditions, and conservation of mass, momentum and energy: 1,2solve various problems in fluid flow including the use of conformal mappings: 2demonstrate knowledge of lift and circulation, motion of point vortices, and the influence of solid boundaries: 2demonstrate knowledge of simple problems involving viscous flow and rectilinear flow down an inclined plane: 2derive and apply Euler¿s equations of motion: 2
