Description for 2022/23

Aims
The aims of the module are to introduce students to the mathematical theory of linear elasticity, including the equilibrium equations, geometrical
relations between strain and displacements, together with the stress-strain constitutive relations. The module will demonstrate some of the
applications of this theory and show that there is significant potential for further development.

Intended Learning Outcomes

describe and utilise the concepts of stress and strain tensors in an elastic solid: 1,3
derive the governing equations of linear elasticity
: 2,3
operate with the constitutive laws of linear isotropic elasticity
: 1,3
formulate and solve boundary value problems in simple domains
: 2,3
solve basic problems for elastic waves propagating in linearly isotropic solids
: 3
