Aims
The module aims to provide the foundation for the student to achieve the GMC Outcomes for Graduates 2018, with the overarching outcome that medical students are tomorrows doctors and, in accordance with Good Medical Practice, must make the care of patients their first concern, applying their knowledge and skills in a competent, ethical and professional manner and taking responsibility for their own actions in complex and uncertain situations.
Students will become independent clinical learners:
Able to extract the relevant clinical data from a clinical situation; symptoms, signs, investigations, treatment and on-going plan.
Able to analyse the pathophysiology of the patients symptoms.
Able to set up hypotheses regarding the aetiology and maintenance of disease.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Exam weighted 50%Written Knowledge
Written knowledge is a cumulative assessment based upon 3 x 3hr papers. Each paper is comprised of Single Best Answer (SBA) questions.
2: Objective Structured Skills & Clinical Examination weighted 50%OSCE
Objective Structured Clinical Examination: `Short cases which require students to
examine part of the patient, without taking a history, before reporting their findings. Despite
not requiring a history to be taken, students may still be assessed on their communication
skills. An objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) is similar to spot assessment and involves a
number of stations, each with a different task. Students are given a set time to complete each
station, demonstrating a certain skill. OSCEs take place under exam conditions in the presence
of an observer who scores a check list (BMA, 2004).
3: Portfolio weighted 0%Portfolio and appraisal
Analysis of student progress made since last appraisal. Review of evidence provided to support stated progress. Review of self-identified deficiencies still to be addressed and proposed plans to address them. Discussion of MSF process and findings. Satisfactory engagement with Workplace Based Assessments (WBA).
