MAX-MSP is a widely used software package allowing for the design of musical algorithms using MIDI and recorded, live or sampled sounds. The ideas and material explored in this module provide skills that can be used in the context of other modules, notably composition and cross media practice. The focus is on the design and development of intelligent tools which aid the composition and performance, provide automation of tasks and extend the capabilities of conventional instruments. The emphasis throughout the module is on a compositional possibility for the use of MAX/MSP.
Aims
-To acquire practical foundations for using computers in assisting musical composition, including real-time processing of sound;-To acquire skills for designing a patch or application for effecting real-time processing of sounds or controlling MIDI devices;-To create and employ a computer environment for aiding the realisation of a composition.

Students must be familiar with the basic concepts of Analog and Digital Audio.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Portfolio weighted 100%Creative project portfolioCreative project comprising of an original electroacoustic composition realised using specified software and hardware. Submitted material to include audio recording of the composition together with patches and dedicated standalone applications employed in the creation of the project. Total duration of the composition should be ca. 3 minutes.
Written documentation of around 1500 - 2000 words explaining the techniques employed and their relevance to the creative project.
