Description for 2022/23

This module introduces the interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives associated with science and society, considering the role that the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences play and their relationships. We consider the historical development of the sciences, different disciplines, their role in society, and major scientific advances of societal significance. Students will be encouraged to explore the nature and importance of the interdisciplinary boundaries associated with their wider studies and the societal relevance through engagement with the Grand Challenges lecture programme of the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Keele. Students will also be introduced to key information literacy, oral presentation, and academic writing and reading skills, and problem-solving skills that are essential to longer term degree success.

Students will learn about the interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives associated with the combination of different academic disciplines across the Natural Sciences and Liberal Arts. Students will explore the nature and significance of the interdisciplinary boundaries associated with their chosen combinations of modules from other disciplines. Considering the societal relevance is a major part of learning through engagement with the Grand Challenges lecture programme of the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Keele, as is the development of key academic practice skills.
