Description for 2022/23


Aims
To support attainment of the required proficiencies, skills and values as required of the programme and NMC (2019b) under minimal supervision from practice assessors and practice supervisors in the following domains:
Domain 1 - Being an accountable, autonomous, professional midwife
Domain 2 ¿ Safe and effective midwifery care: promoting and providing continuity of care and carer
Domain 3 ¿ Universal care for all women and newborn infants
Domain 4 ¿ Additional care for women and newborn infants with complications
Domain 5 ¿ The midwife as a skilled practitioner
To achieve the required proficiency for qualification, you will complete the systematic examination of the newborn (Newborn and Infant Physical Examination - NIPE). You will develop skills in managing obstetric and non-obstetric emergencies and case load to provide continuity of care to small group of women.

evaluate evidence-based best practice to support decision making in response to emerging obstetric complications, additional needs and emergencies in the woman, fetus and newborn infant: 2,3
identify and implement an effective strategy for support, referral, interdisciplinary and multi-agency team working, including escalation and follow up whilst providing midwifery care: 2,3
evidence achievement of proficiency in undertaking the full systematic physical examination of the newborn infant in line with local and national evidence-based protocols as required by the programme (standard of proficiency 6.59.2, NMC, 2019b): 3
demonstrate the skills of numeracy, literacy, digital and technological literacy needed to ensure safe and effective midwifery practice (standard of proficiency 1.23 & 5.12, NMC, 2019b): 1,3

Study hours

This module will comprise of 48hrs of scheduled learning via either face-to-face, online or group work sessions to facilitate clinical simulation and skills, 40hrs of independent study comprising 15 hours directed study related to module content and 25 hrs self directed and assessment preparation. There are 840 placement hrs over 21 weeks based on 40hrs per week with 2.5 hrs reflective time per week: 280hrs summative placement over weeks x3.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Competence weighted 0%
Computer Task: Numeracy and drugs calculation examination
This e learning software numeracy examination constitutes one element in your clinical practice learning module. As a tool for assessing numeracy and drugs calculation, it should demonstrate your ability and competence with safe drug calculations and medicine administration in clinical practice. You will be able to practice the assessment as frequently as required prior to undertaking the examination. There are two sections which each take 20 minutes - 40 minutes in total.

2: Practical Exam weighted 50%
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
This interactive examination in a simulated environment will focus on your performance in selected clinical scenarios by assessing your ability to discuss elements of emergency situations in clinical practice and explain the underpinning theory. There will be two stations, each with a different scenario drawn from clinical practice. You will rotate through the stations using the equipment and clinical records used in practice.

3: Practice Based Assessment weighted 50%
Practice Based Assessment (Midwifery On-going Record of Achievement ¿ MORA)
There are 4 elements contained within the MORA: 1.Demonstrate proficiency with appropriate supervision in all the NMC (2019b) proficiencies which is pass/fail 2.Meet the requirements for professional behaviour which is pass/fail 3.Completion of the practice episode records which includes 20 Newborn and Infant Physical Examination which is pass/fail 4.Holistic assessment
